Barry Barker (aka Mr. B), is the father of 5 kids, has 6 grandkids, and has promoted over 65 Black Belts. He is the author of 3 books “Mind-Body-Spirit: As Seen Through Martial Arts.” He is a 9th Degree Black Belt in American Kenpo, a Licensed Acupuncturist, and full-time school owner and teacher for over 30 years, running Poway Kenpo Karate/Poway Martial Arts, which he founded in 1984.

Mr. Barker became interested in martial arts after watching Bruce Lee. He first enrolled in martial arts at Brian Adams Kenpo Karate School in San Diego, California in 1973, with Parker Linekin as his instructor.

Mr. Barker then dabbled in various martial arts styles until he found an Ed Parker Kenpo Karate School in 1980, located in El Cajon, California. That school was run by a very technical instructor and private student of Mr. Parker, Jim Mitchell (does the stance work photos in Mr. Parker’s Book #2). Mr. Barker earned his 1st Degree Black Belt at this school in 1983, with Mr. Parker as a member of his testing board.

In 1984, Jim Mitchell promoted Mr. Barker to 2nd Degree Black Belt and in the same year he opened Aaction Kenpo Karate, as a Jim Mitchell affiliate school, later changed to Poway Kenpo Karate.

He was promoted to 3rd Degree in 1987 and 4th Degree in 1990.  Shortly after Mr. Mitchell moved out of state, Mr. Barker formed his own Kenpo Association, the American Kenpo Alliance (AKA), to administer to his own Kenpo students.

Additional certification came in 1994 by Orned “Chicken” Gabriel and Steve “Nasty” Anderson, recognizing Mr. Barker as a 4th Degree in their United Karate Federation (UKF).  IKKA Master Instructor Ernest George Jr. promoted Mr. Barker to 5th Degree in 1995 then 6th Degree in 2000.

While continuing to teach Kenpo students, Mr. Barker expanded his training facility in 1998 when he opened a Muay Thai gym called World Class Kickboxing, later becoming The Boxing Club. He added Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in 2005 and MMA in 2008. All of that became part of what is now Poway Martial Arts.

He was promoted to 7th Degree in 2005 by Masters Rick Hughes and Willy Steele, both Ed Parker Black Belts and IKKA Master Instructors’.  In 2010 he was promoted to 8th Degree by GM Parker Linekin, with additional authorization provided from SGM Brian Adams. In 2015 he was promoted to 9th Degree Master of the Arts (MA) after completing his 3 book project Mind-Body-Spirit, recognized by GM Parker Linekin and SGM Brian Adams again and with additional authorization from Masters Orned “Chicken” Gabriel and Reynaldo Leal.

In addition to running Poway Kenpo Karate and Poway Martial Arts, Mr. Barker pursued his education and graduated from Pacific College of Oriental Medicine with a Master’s Degree in Traditional Oriental Medicine (MSTOM) in 2007. He is a Nationally Certified (Dipl. O.M.) and California Licensed Acupuncturist (L.Ac.).

Mr. Barker continues to run Poway Kenpo Karate and Poway Martial Arts while practicing Acupuncture. In 2014, his school celebrated 30 years in business, and is highly regarded in the local community. As an avid learner and student of martial arts, Mr. Barker has also sought additional training to continue to enhance his own skills.

Shortly after enrolling her son in classes at Poway Kenpo Karate she had a slip and fall accident and severely broke her left ankle. Barry Barker (aka Mr. B) would encourage her to try karate when she was better. Returning to weight training after getting the okay to return to physical activity was a little daunting. Dai was concerned about the weight on her still healing ankle, so she started karate. Mr. B was right … Dai instantly loved karate and the full body workout it provide. She took to Kenpo like a sea turtle newly born, making its way to the ocean and through it to find home. Her hard work and determination helped her to earn her 1st Degree Black in just over 5 years. She continues to embrace and enjoy Kenpo and other martial arts.

As he progressed through the ranks, he also progressed through adolescence and decided to stop training at 3rd Brown after graduating high school in 1997. He then became a full time college student, pursing his other passion, music. After graduating with Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from San Diego State University, he resumed training in 2004. Brian earned his 1st degree Black Belt summer 2005. Since receiving his Black Belt, Brian has been working periodically on cruise ships as a pianist traveling the world. Brian plans to continue his practice of the art wherever life takes him.
